THE ASCAŽ GENE BANK: What it is, and what it can do for your dog
By ASCA DNA & Genetics Committee
In conjunction with ImmGen, ASCA's primary testing lab, ASCA has initiated a Gene Bank to which you can submit a sample of your dog's blood. When DNA profiling your dog (by the blood draw method only) you need only fill out a submission form and your dogs blood will be held indefinitely for use in any future health studies.
This is a completely confidential service, and by this one act you are offering hope to those few Aussie owners whose dog may be afflicted with some form of as yet incurable inherited disease. Some of the common diseases that affect the Aussie and for which there is no determining carrier test are: Epilepsy, CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly), Hip Dysplasia, Cataracts, and problems specific to the merling gene.
If you have already submitted blood samples for DNA profiling, simply complete the Gene Bank submission form to have your dog(s) included in the program.
There is no additional fee for enrollment in the Gene Bank.
Comment from ASHGI:
A gene bank is a vital investment in the future of breed research. A dog alive today may be invaluable to research projects that commence after it is gone. We strongly urge all owners of ASCA registered Aussies to provide samples to the Gene Bank.
