What is AussieGENES?
AussieGENES is a group of breeders who are concerned about the increasing incidence of Idiopathic or Inherited Epilepsy (IE) in the Australian Shepherd. Our goal is to increase awareness about the disease within the Aussie Fancy, and to promote participation in the two ongoing research studies to help identify a gene marker for the test. Only when that is accomplished will we be able to screen our breeding stock for the disease and be able to make low-risk crosses.

This website is one way of spreading the word. We will also be placing advertisements in several breed and all-breed publications in an attempt to try to reach all the various competitive areas where people with Aussies might see them.

How do I participate?
It's quite simple. If you have an affected dog, PLEASE get DNA samples for your dog and his close family into the two studies. Supporting these studies is critical!

After that, the most important way to participate is to begin open, candid discussions with each other about crosses that have produced IE. Until we get a gene test, this is the only way we have of identifying "carriers" of the genes, so we can begin selectively breeding away from it.

You can also reach AussieGENES by sending e-mail to StopEpilepsyNow@ashgi.org or by calling (559) 485-2136.

How are we going to save the Aussie from this disease?
We can only save the Aussie from IE if we work together to do so.
